Costa Rica’s Santos region get exclusive use of Tarrazú denomination of Origin

Costa Rica’s Courts ruled that only coffee grown in the area known as Santos Region can use the Tarrazu denomination of origin. The Costa Rican Coffee Institute (Icafe) a government entity, was seeking to expand the region that could use this denomination of origin.

Tarrazu is a well known coffee region that is located south west of the capital of Costa Rica, San Jose. This region produces a very singular coffee that is world renown. It’s the highest coffee growing region in Costa Rica and has very unique environment, perfect for growing gourmet coffees. The combination of rich volcanic slopes, early morning cool mountain breeze and afternoon warm sun showers, produce a citric, chocolaty sweet coffee, that has sharp mild acidity and a full body.

Icafe had been trying to include the areas of Desamparados, Aserri, Corralillo and El Guarco in the Tarrazu region. Although neighboring areas to San Marco de Tarrazu, the main town of the region and from where it gets its name. The court determine that this areas did not offer coffees of the same quality as the ones in San Marcos area.
