27 Aug Costa Rica extends its world record running only on renewable energy, now to 188 days in 2015
As is well known, Costa Rica is usually an the top of the list of most environmental countries, so far this year it have gone 188 days using only renewable energy, that’s 93% of its electrical needs have been met from an eco-friendly resource. Earlier this year the country went 75 days running only on renewal energy breaking the world record; later in the year they broke that record again going 94 days on green energy.
More recently Costa Rica was named as one of only 3 countries in the world to be doing their fair share to keep temperature increases below 2 degrees Celsius; the threshold that scientist see as the upper limit to avoid catastrophic impacts.
Managing this world position has been a product of great leadership from the government and of course the support and backing of its people and the private sector. Costa Rica’s world leadership is most evident in the naming of Christiana Figueres to the Executive secretary of the United Nations Framework on Climate Change, Ms. Figueres has over 15 years of experience on the Costa Rican negotiating team that search for impactful results, one that will help propel other countries onto the mitigation path that Costa Rica has already take.
